Away about 28km to south of Ninh Binh city, Phat Diem church ( known as Phat Diem Cathedral) is located on the land of Kim Son district, with an area of ​​22ha, about 117m wide and 243m long.

Only about 120km from Hanoi capital, it takes about 2 hours to travel, so visitors can easily get to Phat Diem church by many types of means, such as renting motorbikes, taxi, bus, private transfers…

>> Traveling by motorbike: If you choose by motorbike, when you arrive in Ninh Binh town, then turn to road No. 10. Then you move another 28km to Phat Diem town. On the left of 10th Street, visitors will see the ancient Tile Bridge, then run for nearly 200m more, then turn right, you continue to move about 250m to reach Phat Diem church. To avoid getting lost, you should bring Google Maps “treasure” or ask locals along the way.

>> Traveling by taxi: If traveling with a group of close friends or a family of 4-5 people, then a taxi or private car is the most ideal means of transport. 2. History of Phat Diem Church

Not only possessing unique architecture, but Phat Diem church also has great historical value because it has existed for more than 100 years. Let’s go back in time a little to learn about the history of this Catholic building!

Referring to Phat Diem church, an important figure associated with this work cannot be ignored, it is Father Peter Tran Luc (also known as Sau, 1825-1899), the architect of Catholic architecture.

Starting in 1862, priest Tran Luc studied and surveyed the terrain, as well as the entire land of Ninh Binh. Then, he chose this place as the place to build Catholic works. In 1865, he began to search for materials for the project and in 1875 did not officially start construction. It was not until 1898 that it was basically completed.

Maybe you don’t know, but to build this cathedral, the workers had to spend a lot of effort, then went through countless difficulties when they had to transport thousands of tons of stone by road and waterway, with slabs weighing up to 20 tons, hundreds of ironwood columns, including a pillar 12m long, 2.4m in diameter, weighing 7 tons, from Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and hundreds of other places.

3. Phat Diem Cathedral is quite oriental architecture style

Phat Diem church complex was built according to the model of the word “Vuong” with open and closed space, with many different items, arranged reasonably, creating an ancient scene, bearing the traditional look of Vietnamese architecture very clearly.

3.1. Phuong Dinh Hall

One of the places that is considered an architectural masterpiece in the Phat Diem church complex is Phuong Dinh. Right from the moment entering the courtyard, visitors will not be able to help but admire and be amazed with the large communal house, 21m wide, 17m deep, 3 floors high and almost square, assembled from monolithic green stone slabs. The top floor has 5 tower blocks, the bell weighs 2 tons, the height is 1.9m, the sound can be heard up to more than 10km. If you stand here, you can admire all the natural scenery around Phat Diem church.

3.2. Heart of Mary (Stone Church)

What is more impressive to visitors when visiting Phat Diem church complex is the Church of the Heart of Our Lady, first built in 1883, with a length of 15.30m, a width of 8.50m, a height of 6m and completely made of stone. Inside the church, there are many beautiful stone reliefs, especially the carvings of the four quarters, apricot, chrysanthemum, and bamboo, symbolizing the weather and the beauty of the four seasons of the year.
