Ninh Binh is located at the southernmost tip of the Northern Delta, about 90 km south of Hanoi capital, the boundary of three geographical regions: the Northwest, the Red River Delta and the North Central Coast. The North borders Ha Nam province; the East borders Nam Dinh province; the Southeast borders the East Sea; The West and Southwest borders Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces. The natural area is about 1,386km2, the population is about 952,000 people. With over 1,400km2 of natural area, Ninh Binh has forests, sea and a diverse system of fauna and flora. Ninh Binh topography encompasses plains and the mountains of the Vietnam northwest mountain range. Ninh Binh also keeps a strategic position for military security and social development. Here, troops were usually rallied on their way to the north or south of Vietnam, creating famous victories in Vietnamese national history.

The distance from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is not too far, only about 90km. The way same as how to get to Tam Coc or Trang An... Therefore, you can travel to Ninh Binh by bus, train or private vehicles such as cars and motorbikes. The average travel time is about 2-3 hours.

The distance from Ho Chi Minh city to Ninh Binh is about more than 1,600 km by road. Therefore, the most suitable means of transportation is by plane. You have two good choices is to fly Ho Chi Minh city - Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city to Thanh Hoa. Then, catch a bus or taxi at the airport to move to Ninh Binh city.

From cities along the railways from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh city, can stop over in Ninh Binh. and other places as Halong bay, Cat Ba island or Hai Phong, you must to take private vehicle or taxi and have some tourist buses.Hanoi to Ninh Binh road map

Although it is a small province, Ninh Binh has a very diverse terrain: mountains, plains, and coastal areas with all the nuances of miniature Vietnam. Ⅷ. When is the good time to travel Ninh Binh?

We recommend to travel to Ninh Binh in Spring to Summer and Autumn are the most beautiful and suitable seasons for a trip to Ninh Binh. January-March is when the weather is in spring, the weather is cool, April - June not too cold. June to October is when Ninh Binh enters the only ripe rice season (2 crops in year) of the year, combining pleasant and warm weather to please tours and sightseeing.

General Information:

Morning mist canopies the mountains and caves of Tam Coc; a woman on a bicycle cycles past perfectly green rice fields dotted with bamboo jats; "thit cho" ("dog meat") signs line the narrow alley walls; vivid plant life juxtaposition old dilapidated Vietnamese houses; and an elderly couple quietly fish in the Kenh Ga canal.

You are in Ninh Binh, a small Northern town offering it's visitors a unique Vietnamese experience, with it's natural beauty charming all.

Why not go:

Travellers who want to party will not enjoy Ninh Binh, as it does not provide much Western fare, and no nightclubs or bars catered to foreigners.

Why go:

Photos, photos, photos. If your a keen photographer, use the vivid colours and scenery as the focal point of your pictures.

The lakes, rivers, caves, plant life, quiet roads, and rice fields all provide a much quieter backdrop than nearby Hanoi. Come to Ninh Binh if you like to enjoy the natural world at it's best.

Stay Away From:

Ninh Binh is a relatively safe town, and most locals are curious and excited to see foreigners. Most families will lock up their houses by 9:30 and it instantly becomes deserted, so walking around the streets at night time is not reccomended, but not entirely unsafe.

Getting There:

Ninh Binh is located only 93 km from Hanoi, and a bus will take you directly there. For the cheapest option, ask your hotel in Hanoi where the nearest bus station is and what times buses leave for Ninh Binh. There will be hundreds of buses at the station with their destinations listed on the front. Hop on one of the Ninh Binh buses, and pay the fare (via hand signals or pen and paper). It is 2 hours to Ninh Binh and local cost is around 100,000 Dong.

Alternatively, let the hotel arrange everything for you, and to take you to the bus station. They will charge a higher price, but it will be much more convenient.

Getting There & Away

The bus station in Ninh Binh is located near the Lim Bridge, just below the overpass to Phat Diem. Regular public buses leave almost hourly for the Giap Bat bus station in Hanoi ( 2½ hours, 93km). Ninh Binh is also a stop for open-tour buses between Hanoi ( two hours) and Hue ( 10 hours), which drop off and pick up passengers at some of the hotels.
Ninh Binh's train station (1 Ð Hoang Hoa Tham) is a scheduled stop for Reunification Express trains, with destinations including Hanoi (two to 2½ hours, four daily), Thanh Hoa (one to 1½ hours, three daily) and Hue ( 12½ to 13½ hours, three daily).
Travelling distances to the nearest major towns are 93km to Hanoi, 60km to Thanh Hoa and 49km to Thai Binh.

Getting around Ninh Binh

Bikes and motorbikes (with or without drivers) can be hired from most hotels. Bicycle hire usually only costs around US$ to US$ per day, while motorbikes are around US$ to US$. A driver's rates will depend on distance and time, but for a full day is likely to be around US$.
